Discovery Bay to Mui Wo Hiking Trail 1

Walk through the pergola. Take a moment to enjoy the views before heading downhill.

There are several ways to get to Mui Wo from Discovery Bay. This is the most popular route that is taken by Families and other novice hikers who tend to think that the walk to Mui Wo is easy, needless to say that it is often only done once due to its significant length and exposure to the sun due to lack of shading. It’s popularity among Discovery Bay locals is due to the fact that the other local hiking trail options are mostly unknown other than on this website, and those who venture out to Mui Wo do so by referral of their friends who want revenge on the referrals that they got from other friends who recommended the trail to them once upon a time. Well that’s my theory anyway.

Trail Statistics

Start: DB Ferry Pier
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 7.75km
Elevation gain: 383m
Elevation loss: 374m
Min elevation: -13m
Max elevation: 251m
Time: 2hr
End: Mui Wo Ferry Pier

This popular route is more of a walking trail than a hiking trail since it is all on paved paths. 100% concrete which makes hiking during the summer months especially hot, exhausting and sweaty. A match for heat exhaustion if you’re not careful, which on many occasions may result due to the inexperience of most people who decide to hike this trail. Trail number 2 is my custom designed trail which features 70% unpaved trails.

Trail Head Options

Discovery Bay Ferry from Pier 3 in Central
DB01R bus from Tung Chung, last stop
DB03R Bus from Sunny Bay, last stop
If you live in Discovery Bay, make your way to the Ferry Pier

So, what can you get out of this hike? To start off it is relatively long for a novice hiker. The main feature of this trail is Trappist Monastery along the way. Apart from that it offers some nice views at the highest point overlooking Peng Chau and Central if the skies are clear enough, as well as views of Mui Wo.

Trappist Monastery

At the end of the hike there is the beach in Mui Wo which is nice to take a stroll on after your long hike. As for food options in Mui Wo it is rather limited and the ferry times back to Discovery Bay are very limited so so might want to plan accordingly.

Trail End Options
