What I like most about this hiking trail is that it starts at a high point and meanders down the mountain slowly. I’m a sucker for downhill trails, who isn’t?
Hong Kong Trail Stage 1 is great for grabbing some great photos overlooking Hong Kong. It also has some nice waterfalls crossing the path from the midway point onward.

This hike is very much family orientated with signage displaying wildlife and fauna found in the surrounding areas. The hike is quite long though, at 7km so keep this in mind especially when hiking on a hot day – take lots of water if you do not hike often. The end of the trail continues onto Stage 2 of Hong Kong Trail, so either be prepared to continue hiking, or make your way back up to the peak on Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road.

First off, here is a map of the mobile network coverage of Hong Kong Trail Stage 1. Take note of telephone booth locations and poor network coverage areas just in case you or one of your team members should have an accident. It is also useful to note the distance marker points so that if you do have an accident, that you can quote the nearest distance post. Buy the Hong Kong Island Countryside Series Map online for a detailed hiking map that you can take with you on the trail.

Now lets get on with the Hike. At The Peak, make your way to the main entrance of The Peak Tower, and turn right, looking for Luard Road.
You will see a sign for Lugard Road, which is where Hong Kong Trail Stage 1 starts. Just after this sign is a toilet if you need it down the stairs to the right, otherwise continue straight ahead passing right of the white building.
Onwards, the trail meanders alongside the mountains edge on a paved trail until you reach an open park area.
You will have a lot of photo opportunities along this section overlooking Hong Kong if it is a clear day.
You can also find lots of signage along this section describing the plants, trees and wildlife found in the area.
Follow the sign at the park area that points to Pokfulam Reservoir via Harlech Road.
When you get to the park at the end of Harlech Road, cross over it to find some stairs leading down onto more of a real hiking trail.
After H014 you will reach Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road. This is your chance to get back to the Peak. Turn left to return, of follow the sign towards Peel Rise to continue onto Hong Kong Trail Stage 2.
