Hiking Hong Kong Discovery Bay Lookout Loop

The Discovery Bay Lookout Loop hike is a family friendly hike. Though the first section is a little bit difficult, if taken slowly it can be handled well.

This hiking trail scores 3 stars for enjoyment, as although it offers some great views of Discovery Bay, that's about all it offers. Difficulty also scores 3 stars as the initial climb is quite tough and may take a while.

Starting from Discovery Bay Ferry Pier, or the Discovery Bay Bus Terminus, follow the road up to the main road and turn right.

If you have arrived by ferry, proceed from the ferry pier along the water front to the left, and up the gentle slope past the busses. Turn right onto the main road and continue walking along this road until you reach a playground on the right hand side of the road, about an eight minute walk.

Please note that the image above is looking down from the opposite direction from which you will be coming from.

The playground will be on your right, and to the left you will see this yellow rubbish bin and green sign, marking the start of the hike up the hill. As duly noted on the signpost, this trail is about 700 metres to the lookout point. Be careful on the very start of this trail as the rocks can get quite slippery if it has been raining. Have a sip of water, prepare yourself for a tough battle ahead, as it is non stop steep steps for a little while!

A little way up the hill, there is a turn off to the left. We will be coming out of here on our way back. For now, be sure to keep going straight up the mountain.

Don't forget to turn around and check on your progress once in a while. There are some great views of Discovery Bay from this point and up.

As you get higher up the hill, the stairs get steeper and steeper. Take care, especially as some of the steps have corroded away due to the rain.

As you reach the top, the train starts to flatten out a little. Now is a good time to take a rest. Make it a short one though, as the hiking train ahead starts to flatten out, making it easy to catch your breath.

On a clear day, there are some great views of Discovery Bay from up here.

When you see the trig point (that while pole), you have reached the end of your ascent.

Make your way down, being careful not to slip, as the stairs here are not very sturdy, and also very steep toward the bottom. At the bottom, take a left and head toward the lookout point.

Congratulations! You have reached the Discovery Bay lookout point. Have a rest, take in the views, then continue down the hill, through the other side of the lookout pagoda.

When you get to the bottom of this section, turn left at the green rubbish bin.

Take great care when going down this next section as during times of high humidity or after a rainstorm this section becomes extremely slippery.

Avoid standing on any of the rocks or 'green' ground whenever you can.

At the bottom, make you way around the open drain and head down the stairs on the other side.

Follow the concrete path around and down the stairs at the end.

Turn left following the railing, then turn right and make your way down this very very long staircase.

Turn left at the bottom and follow the grass until, at the building, take a right down another set of stairs.

The the bottom of these stairs, turn right, cross the road, and turn left after the first building.

There is a staircase going down between the two buildings. Turn left at the bottom of the stairs and follow the windy road up the gentle slope.

Be sure to keep to the right hand side of the road all the way up the hill as there is a fork in the road ahead and incidentally, you want to take a right! When you get to the point below, keep on going past the front of these buildings until you get to what appears to be a dead end.

At the end of the road, keep walking following the green railing, pictured below, and you will see a trail leading down into the bushes.

Follow this hiking trail. At the end, turn right and head back down the steep stairs that we hiked up at the beginning. Continue down to the road, turn left, and head on back down to the ferry pier.
