Hiking Hong Kong Lantau Trail Stage 5

Lantau Trail Stage 5 is a great hiking trail which gets you away from everything and offers some exquisite views of Lantau South Country Park.

This hiking trail gets 5 stars for enjoyment as it is predominantly off paved trails, offers a good range of various terrain and has great views of Lantau South Country Park, Soko Islands, Lantau Peak, Tai O and Shek Pik Reservoir. The trail gets four stars for difficulty as it is rather long and rises and falls over many mountain tops.

This hiking trail starts from the end of Lantau Trail Stage 4 or you can jump on either the number 11 bus from Tung Chung to Tai O or the more expensive number 23 bus from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping.

Head up through the Lantau Trail sign and cross through the park toward the toilet block. The trail leads up the hill behind the toilet block.

Lantau Peak can be seen to your left. On this bright, sunny day it was covered in cloud which is difficult to see due to the glare.

There are loads of insects jumping and flying around on the start of this trail. Keep you eyes peeled.

Tai O can be seen far in the distance. This is most likely where you will be headed as Lantau Trail Stage 5 ends at the start of Lantau Trail Stage 6 which continues on to Tai O.

Another little critter I saw jumping around. Look out for his identity on the Hong Kong Insects page.

Shek Pik Reservoir and Prison can be seen down to your left when you get to the top of the first hill.

The trail follows the mountain ridges to begin with. In the image below you can see it drop off the hill and continue up the hill ahead. On a hot and sunny day like this one, this trail is quite difficult.
