Hiking Hong Kong Peng Chau Loop 01
Please visit our Peng Chau Information page for more details about Peng Chau including Ferry Timetables from and to Central, Discovery Bay and Cheung Chau as well as a run down of the various hiking trails found on Peng Chau.
This Peng Chau hiking trail offers nice views of Hong Kong Island on a (very) clear day, as well as the Disneyland hotels and Discovery Bay. It therefore gets a 3 star rating for enjoyment. The trail is completely paved however and is very flat making it very easy in difficulty.
The starting point for this hike is the Peng Chau Market which is located mid-way between the Central ferry pier and the Discovery Bay ferry pier.

Starting the hike at the Peng Chau Market, continue around the right hand side of the market and past HSBC. On the right you should find a small shop selling drinks: grab a couple of drinks if it is a hot day.

At the end of this alley, go towards the left and turn right straight away into a dark alley way.

As it comes into the warmer months after summer, you will start to see the appearance of these Giant Golden Orb Weaver spiders. This one pictured above was seen in March and is about the length of my little finger (leg span included. When fully grown, they may be as large as a mans hand.

Continue through the alley way and at the end turn left around the big tree and then head right toward the beach.

At the beach take a left and continue along the beach front. On a clear day you can see Hong Kong Island from here.

After the Temple, take the second left at the street lamp pictured above.

Up ahead, go right then left through the chicane.

Continue straight along the concrete trail heading toward the trees in the distance.

Near the top of the incline, take a left. There is a sign here marking the "Family Trail", however the signs are so old that they are barely readable. You'll know you are at the right turn off when dogs bark loudly behind the fence, scaring you half to death!

Continue along the trail and take the next right down the slope. Continue along and veer left at the gate ahead.

At the end of this section, veer left and continue down the steps.

Occasionally you will catch a glimpse of Disneyland as well as the odd Discovery Bay ferry.

Up ahead, you can continue on straight to go down to the beach where you can see some nice rocky areas by the beach side and views of Central on a clear day.
It is a bit of a hike down, and you have to come back up the same way to continue along this trail (pictured here toward the left).
The beach at the bottom is quite dirty as a lot of rubbish washes up on it, and the water smells particularly bad for some reason - like oil - so I only recommend going down to the beach if you are hiking on a clear day. If not, then take a left here. We will continue to show you the view ahead:

When you get to the bottom, you are greeted with this. Unfortunately a lot of rubbish gets dumped on this beach due to its location. I doubt that it is ever cleaned up. It also smells like oil down here which is rather unpleasant.

The views of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are quite nice though on a clear day.

There are also some nice views of Disneyland down here.

You probably won't want to spend too long down here though due to the bad smell, so turn around and head back up those stairs that you came down.

Turn right at the junction above, and head toward Disneyland.

At the bottom of this set of stairs you can turn right and visit the beach before heading back and continuing along Peng Yu Path which follows the water front.

There are two beaches down here. The one facing Hong Kong Island is littered with rubbish, and the one facing Disneyland is spotless as it is sheltered from the tidal flow.

Turn around and head straight onto Peng Yu Path.

The beaches along Peng Yu Path are very inviting, so you may actually want to bring along some swimmers and go for a dip.

There are some nice views of Discovery Bay from over here.

At the end of Peng Yu Path you will be greeted with some pleasant views of the pier off Tai Lei Island. Continue down and left on to the road at the end of this path.

Continue along the road and past the residential buildings, toward the water front.

Veer left at the park then right at the fire station. Walk past Wellcome and back to the ferry pier from where you started. I hope you enjoyed this hiking trail!
